I often get asked, “what does acupuncture treat”? Acupuncture and Chinese medicine treats almost all disorders with internal medicine, emotional disorders and pain management.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a 3000-year-old medicine from ancient China. Its therapeutic treatments have been used for thousands of years to help illness and is now a part of our modern day medicine in the United States and around the world. Acupuncture has gained recognition for its health benefits treating bodily ailments naturally. It is now being recognized by many doctors in areas of pain management, migraines and woman’s health issues and more. The beauty of acupuncture, is that it looks at the entire body when diagnosing health issues. Treatments aim at healing the root issue of health disorders not just covering up symptoms.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture uses small needles inserted into certain “points” on the body’s surface. In Chinese Medical theory, acupuncture points are connected to “meridians” which is a channel network system in the body that carry qi (energy), blood and fluids throughout the body. Each acupuncture point has a specific “function” so a series of points create a certain therapeutic affect in the body. For example, if someone comes in for right hip pain there can be points that are inserted around the hip as well as well as distal points on the hands, feet and shoulder.
A certain number of treatments are needed in order to help a person with their individual health issues. Needles are retained anywhere from 15 minutes to 30 minutes.

What is a Typical Acupuncture Session Like?

Chinese Medicine has different “categories” when diagnosing health disorders. A full health inquiry is done along with inspecting the person’s face and body. Palpation enables a practitioner to feel warm, cold ,tense or soft places along the body’s surface. Hearing and smelling along with looking at the person’s tongue and feeling their pulse are all part of diagnostic tools in Chinese Medicine. This enables a practitioner to understand what imbalances are going on in the body that are causing the health issues.

Acupuncture Treatment Plan

Once a diagnosis is formed, then a treatment plan is given. I speak to my patients about a treatment protocol so they understand how treatment works and how many treatments are needed in order to help their health issues resolve.

Acupuncture does not hurt. Sometimes a patient can feel a “pinch” when the needle is initially inserted. Once the needles are inserted, patients can experience heaviness near the needle, tingling in the body or they may feel a sense of calm. After a session, patients can resume their daily activities.
