In addition to what’s going on in your body, environmental factors play a large role in your ability to become pregnant. That’s one reason why yoga might be a good activity to look into if you are trying to conceive.

According to this article, yoga is effective in promoting fertility due to its focus on removing stress from your body, as well as tension being placed on the reproductive organs. Yoga class is also a great time to put aside other worries in your life and focus on your intentions, one of which just might be to soon see a baby on its way!

The common cold can make you feel just horrible. As most over the counter medications serve only to help decrease the symptoms, there is no actual treatment for the common cold except rest. When treating a cold, the importance is not just alleviating symptoms but helping rid the body of the pathogen.

In Chinese Medicine, acupuncture and herbal medicine help the body’s natural immunity ward off a cold thus not only helping to get rid of the bug but also to prevent a cold from further turning into the flu.

Chinese Medicine has different diagnoses for a cold. A common pattern this time of year is a wind cold and wind heat pattern. Each pattern is treated with different acupuncture points as well as herbal prescriptions.

A wind cold type of pattern presents wit a runny nose, chills, headache and fever. A common formula that I prescribe with this type of pattern is Gui Zhi Tang. Gui zhi tang helps the body’s immune system naturally rid the pathogen by warming the pathogen and expelling it from the body. A wind heat type of pattern presents with headache, thirst, stuffy nose with yellow discharge and feeling warm. For this type of pattern, I would prescribe a formula like Sang Ju Yin which helps to clear heat, decrease inflammationand mucous as well as increase immunity.

The best time to treat a cold is during the initial stages of symptoms. This is because the pathogen is at the superficial aspects of the body where it can be treated. As the pathogen progresses further into the body, the symptoms begin to worsen and different treatment is needed at that time.

Of course, the number one trick in treating a cold is to prevent it in the first place. This means a strong healthy immune system. I usually recommend a formula called Jade Wind Screen, which naturally helps build immunity. If a person has a weak constitution, I will also prescribe herbs to help nourish their body along with their immune system to prevent them from getting sick.

Here are some recommendations on how to increase your body’s natural immunity; thus helping to prevent getting sick in the first place.

Avoid Uncooked Raw Foods

This time of year calls for warm nourishing foods that help build our natural “qi” or energy. Lightly cook your foods to help your digestive system easily breakdown and absorb nutrients. An over consumption of raw and uncooked foods lowers our body’s natural temperature and therefore starts to lower our natural “qi”, which is needed to support our immune system.

Wear A Scarf

Dressing for the weather is particularly important in staying healthy and preventing illness. Your neck is one of the most vulnerable areas of your body for pathogenic attacks. Therefore, it is important to cover your neck in order to stay healthy and prevent getting sick.

Eat Properly
It is important to eat around the same time everyday.  Make sure not to skip meals or eat too late. A routine enhances your digestive system’s function, which is important because the digestive system supports our overall immune system.

Make sure to eat a variety of foods and well-balanced meals. Incorporate fiber found in oats and barley as it helps to cleanse your digestive system. Increase vegetable intake with chard and kale, which is abundant with vitamins and antioxidants. Finally, supplement your diet with a good multi-vitamin to further help boost immunity.

Get Your Z’s

So why is sleep so important? Sleep enables the body to recover from stressors that break it down during the day.

A study done by the Archives of Internal Medicine found that people who get less than seven hours of sleep are three times more likely to get sick. So make sure that you get at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep per night.

Whether you are suffering from lack of sleep or a serious disease, such as cancer, acupuncture offers a myriad of positive benefits. In fact, it’s becoming more and more common for cancer treatment centers and oncologists to provide acupuncture as part of the long-term healing process or even hire full-time acupuncturists to work with clients on-site.

In this article, The Huffington Post listed a handful of ways that acupuncture may be beneficial to those looking to heal their bodies, such as:

  • Managing Pain
  • Activating Immune System
  • Managing Inflammation
  • Reducing Nausea
  • Curing Dry Mouth
  • Treating Sleep Problems
  • Decreasing Hot Flash Symptoms

In order to truly heal patients of health disorders, it is important to understand the emotional aspect that may be a causative factor to why their individual health issue came about. In Chinese Medicine, there are seven emotions. Each emotion is normal to experience, but an exuberance of any one emotion can affect certain organ systems in the body and result in health disorders.

Grief

A bereavement or situation where someone is grieving can affect the lung organ. Asthma, chronic cough or shortness of breath can develop from grief.

Sorrow
Extreme sorrow also affects the lungs and can result in lung pathology.

Worry

Worry affects the digestive system. People who worry all the time can experience digestive system disorders such as IBS, bloating or gas.

Fear

Fear affects the kidneys. In Chinese Medicine, the kidneys are the organs responsible for development of the body, bone structure and reproductive development. Health disorders that may develop as a result of fear include urinary problems, back issues, menstrual disorders or sexual disorders.

Joy
Joy affects the heart. Although joy is an emotion that most people like to experience, an excess of the emotion can affect the heart because it can lead to sorrow. Physical manifestations may be heart palpitations, excessive laughter, poor concentration and memory.

Anger
Anger and pent up emotions lead to frustration, which affects the liver. Painful menstruation, PMS, shortness of breath, UTI’s and headaches can appear.

Fright

Fright affects the heart organ, which can manifest in a similar manner to the heart disorders seen in too much joy. Examples include heart palpitations, poor concentration and memory, or waking up suddenly at 5am.

Developing a keen sense of awareness to your body enables you to understand how emotions can affect your overall health. Ultimately, we need to treat not only our physical ailments, but also emotional imbalances in order to truly heal the body and treat the root cause of certain ailments and disease.

Health issues, stress and age are all major factors that influence the ability to conceive. With nearly three million women facing fertility challenges in America each year, its important to realize that you are not alone and that there a number of treatments that can help you.

In Chinese Herbal Medicine, there is the belief that you must “prepare the soil” before getting pregnant. So, three or four months before you plan to get pregnant, its important to add in some key natural foods that will help your body accept the pregnancy. These include:

  • Miso: Filled with healthy salts, miso balances the kidney, one of
    kale
    Fresh Kale

the most important organs in the body according to TCM.

  • Kale/Chard/Collards: These dark leafy greens are abundantwith vitamins and minerals, especially folic acid, which hasbeen shown to improve your chances of conception.
  • Seaweed: Seaweed helps balance your “water essence” and offers a number of minerals and natural salts that help nourish the kidneys.
  • Beans: Take a look at the shape of the beans you are eating. Those shaped like the ovaries, kidneys, etc. are beneficial to the respective organs and provide good natural protein.

If you are trying to get pregnant, it is important to understand your body’s natural fertility signs because there is a certain window of opportunity in a women’s monthly cycle that allows her the ability to get pregnant. In my experience, a lot of couples are not educated on small changes that can really enhance their fertility.

One of the ways that you can check for your highest fertility time is through observation of your cervical discharge. The body has an amazing ability to try and get pregnant and cervical mucus is an important factor.

Cervical mucus

After your period, your cervix is dry and you do not notice any cervical discharge. Prior to ovulation, you will begin to notice cervical discharge that may be thick, white and creamy.  As you get closer to ovulation, your cervical mucus becomes thinner until it is egg white, slippery and stretchy. The most abundant of the egg white, stretchy cervical discharge is your “peak” fertility time and this is the most optimal time to conceive. Egg white, slippery, stretchy discharge seen around ovulation is very important because it:

  • Protects Sperm against the otherwise acidic environment.
  • Helps Sperm Swim- This type of cervical discharge nourishes sperm and helps sperm swim up the cervical canal into the fallopian tubes where conception takes place.
  • Filters Abnormal Sperm- This type of cervical discharge slows down abnormal sperm so it enhances the body’s ability for natural selection to take place.

After ovulation you will notice that your cervical discharge dries up. The best way to check for your fertile cervical discharge is to wash your hands and insert your index finger up into your cervix. This should be done around day 11 of your cycle or two  to three days before ovulation. You should be able to get cervical mucus onto your fingers and then when you pull out try to stretch this cervical discharge between your index finger and thumb. Observe if the mucus is egg white, slippery and stretchy. Optimal mucus should be egg white and stretch at least 1 cm.

Enhancing Fertile Cervical Discharge

Some women may experience scanty cervical discharge or may not notice any cervical discharge at all. In Chinese Medicine, scanty cervical discharge signifies a “dry” environment which is not optimal for conception to take place. Think of planting a seed in soil in dry soil.  Because cervical mucus is critical to getting pregnant, there are ways that you can enhance fertile cervical discharge.

Water
Increase Water Intake To Promote Cervical Health

Chinese Herbal Medicine is extremely effective in helping increase fertile cervical mucus.

A common formula that I base many of my follicular herbal treatments is called Liu Wei Di Huang Wan. Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is a very nourishing formula that helps to boost estradiole levels and increase fertility.  Within a certain amount of cycles, you should be able to begin to clearly see fertile mucus. This is a great indicator of fertility enhancement.

Another way to enhance cervical health is to make sure to have at least 8 ounces of water per day. Robittussin or mucinex can also enhance cervical discharge. Both these types of medication, which are commonly used for head colds, are helpful because they work to descend cervical mucus.

Pre-seed is a lubricant that is sperm friendly. All other types of lubricants can kill off sperm.

You also want to avoid anything that can tend to dry cervical discharge. Decrease caffeine intake to one cup of coffee per day. Alcohol should be limited to one drink 2 x per week.  Antihistamines, anti-depressants and other types of medications should also be avoided since they tend to  dry cervical mucus.

The other day I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a patient of mine
who just had her baby boy a couple of weeks ago. Welcome Julian! Not only were the flowers a wonderful gift, but they signified a celebration of a hard journey that my patient took to get pregnant.

Michelle came into my office about 11 months ago. She was 38 years old and she was desperately trying to get pregnant.  Her doctor suggested an IUI with clomid, a commonly used fertility drug. She had three IUI’s and unfortunately the side effects of clomid were migraines, night sweats, hot flashes and anxiety.  Although clomid works to help many women ovulate, it is warming and drying. Therefore, if a woman already has fluid insufficiency, this can accentuate her symptoms.  In December of 2009, Michelle did not ovulate. Further testing from her doctor showed that her estradiole levels were very low and her FSH went up to 30! Her doctor said she should look into IVF immediately and if it did not work in one round to seriously consider using donor eggs.

Michelle called my office incredibly upset and crying her whole visit.  I explained that I did not believe that what her doctor told her was her true hormone levels. Because she was already warm and dry, clomid was actually damaging her fluids. In Chinese Medicine, estradiole is known as a yin substance. As her estradiole was depleted, her FSH levels rose.  As I calmed her down, I told her not to give up but it was essential to start to “rescue” her depleted estrogen. I prescribed her a heavy dosage of herbal medicine to help replenish her low estradiole levels.

Lo and behold, when Michelle came back in February she was pregnant! This is a great case of how Chinese Herbal Medicine can really help nourish hormones and boost fertility. Michelle now has a beautiful baby boy, Julian, and he was well worth her fertility journey.

Recurrent miscarriage is when three or more consecutive miscarriages take place. With recurrent miscarriages, there is a consistent factor that is not enabling the pregnancy to go full-term. A full medical diagnostic review is needed in order to diagnose the cause of recurrent miscarriages. These may include:

  • Thyroid Disorder
  • Thrombophilia
  • Antiphospholipid Syndrome
  • Chromosomal Abnormalities
  • Infections
  • Uterine Anamolies including polyps, uterine fibroids and a malformed uterine septum
  • Unexplained Conditions

Those cases in which western medicine is unsuccessful at treating recurrent miscarriages are an area where Chinese Medicine can help. There are different diagnoses in Chinese Medicine that cause recurrent miscarriages.

Kidneys Yin and Yang Deficiency

In Chinese Medicine, the kidneys hold the body’s essence. The kidney energy is what makes up our body’s constitution. These organs are responsible for development and reproduction and therefore the health of the kidney qi, or energy, is vital for a healthy pregnancy to ensue. If the kidney’s yin or yang is deficient, the body is unable to hold a pregnancy.

Qi and Blood Deficiency

The spleen qi, or energy of the spleen, enables the closing of the cervix and helps create blood to nourish the fetus. If the cervix does not properly close, repeated miscarriages may take place. In this case, it’s necessary to help increase the spleen’s energy. A lack of energy may cause a blood deficiency, which leads to small babies and a lack of malnourishment to the embryo. Blood deficiency can show up as a scanty menstrual flow and a thin uterine lining.

Heat in the Blood

This can be due to an insufficiency of kidney yin, or stress, which creates heat. Heat can also be due to infection. A female’s Basal Body Temperature (BBT) chart will often be in the high 98′s even in the 99′s. Because heat causes agitation, too much of it does not create an optimal environment for pregnancy.

Blood Stasis

For a pregnancy to take, the uterine lining needs to be fresh and have ample blood flow to the embryo. A sure sign of blood stasis is cramps during a female’s period. Endometriosis also falls into the blood stasis category. Women who are diagnosed under this category show up with blood clotting disorders and are given heparin or aspirin during pregnancy. In Chinese Medicine, blood stasis can also mean actual obstructions in the uterine lining that can lead to miscarriage. Herbal medicine is helpful to encourage blood flow and remove stasis.

Herbal Medicine and Recurrent Miscarriages

In treating recurrent miscarriages, it is important to help strengthen the body’s reproductive health by treating pathological symptoms. Treatment is most commonly given in the form of herbal prescriptions. Herbal medicine is comprised of different herbs that have a certain therapeutic effect on the body. Each formula is specifically tailored to the individual patient and targets the pathology in the reproductive tract that is causing pregnancy loss to take place.

In Chinese Medicine, summer is part of the “yang” season designated by the warm weather. It is the time of year when the body’s energy is exuberant and at it’s “utmost peak”.  In keeping balance and health, it is important to eat in accordance with the seasons. Since summer is marked by heat, it is important to eat foods that clear heat and generate fluids. Too much heat in the body can lead to restlessness, insomnia, and irritability, as well as skin disorders and arthritis.

In Chinese Medicine, food and herbs have energetic properties that influence the body. Foods have a temperature (which does not mean cooked or raw) and certain foods correspond to certain organs. In the summer, cool foods that cool down the body and also aid in nourishing fluids are recommended.

Watermelon

watermelon

Watermelon is both a food and an herb in Chinese Medicine. It helps to clear summer heat, nourish fluids and decrease pathological fluids. The rich moisture of the fruit helps one cool off on a hot summer day. Watermelon seeds are used for their diuretic properties because they help promote urination, thus reducing swelling in humid weather.

Cucumber

Cucumber, in Chinese Medicine, is cool in nature so it helps to clear heat as well as nourish fluids and boost kidney essence. It has anti-inflammatory properties help sore throats, arthritis, rashes, impotence and frequent urination. It’s moistening properties help to moisten dryness, which is why it is a great skin replenisher.

Strawberry

In TCM, strawberries help to nourish lung fluids and strengthen the digestive system. Strawberries are also bountiful in vitamin A, folate and antioxidants. Strawberries benefit a dry cough and their diuretic qualities help to promote difficult urination. You can add strawberries to yogurt, salads or even dessert!

Mint

Mint, known as bo he in Chinese Medicine, and is also put in herbal prescriptions for its medicinal value. Studies show that it can ward off certain bacteria and viruses. In Chinese Medicine, it is cool and aromatic and can treat a sore throat, red eyes, irritability and rashes. Mint is also great for sinus congestion.

If you suffer from insomnia, it can wreak havoc in your life. Having difficulty sleeping means you never feel fully nourished, your energy lags, your concentration may suffer, but you still cannot get the full sleep you are looking for.

Most people who suffer from insomnia are given sleep aids like Ambien in order to help resolve their sleep issues. The problem with sleep aids-is if not taken-insomnia will manifest once again.

Sleep in Chinese Medicine

Sleep is essential to nourishment and healing. During sleep, our bodies are able to recover, repair and replenish. A lack of sleep can make one feel tired and moody, as well as make you prone to headaches or many other health disorders; therefore in Chinese Medicine sleep is essential to restore the body’s health.  In Chinese Medicine, difficulty with sleeping can be a pathology in yin, blood, yang, as well as the heart, liver, spleen and kidney organs. Understanding the disharmonies and imbalances is key to understanding what underlying pathologies are resulting in insomnia. Correcting those balances will lead the way to properly rectify one’s sleep issues.

There are different types of patterns that insomnia present. They are:

  • Difficulty Falling Asleep: Insomnia

This is normally due to a heart blood and spleen qi deficiency. The body needs enough energy and blood to actually fall asleep.  Other symptoms may include poor concentration, dizziness, loose stools and fatigue.

  • Difficulty Staying Asleep: People who have difficulty staying asleep complain of waking up every two hours. This is due to a deficiency of the heart and kidney yin or fluids. People who suffer from this presentation may complain of tossing and turning or feeling hot at night with frequent night sweats.
  • Dream Disturbed Sleep: When a person has vivid dreams or dream disturbed sleep, this is due to a liver and gallbladder excess.
  • Waking up at 3-4AM: This is a common pattern in people who suffer from insomnia. Some people complain of waking up and lying in bed thinking, or even getting up and doing work. In Chinese medicine, this is due to liver qi stagnation where the energy of the liver is stagnant.

How Acupuncture Treats Insomnia
Acupuncture helps to treat insomnia by restoring the body’s natural harmony by restoring the imbalances that are causing insomnia to manifest.  An array of acupuncture points treats different patterns that are present. For example, through a diagnostic assessment, if a patient complains of waking up between 3 and 4am, is irritable, has chest heaviness and experiences other liver qi stagnation signs I will choose points to help open and move the liver’s energy. Points such as Pericardium 7, located on the inner wrist and shen men located in the outer ear, help to promote soundful sleep in those who complain of tension and worry and tend to have difficulty falling asleep. The key is to understand the core pathology in an individual and treat them accordingly. A certain amount of treatments start to balance the imbalanced organs and energy-and once completely restored-a person has restful sleep once again.

Other Natural Ways to Help You Sleep Soundly

  • Diet: Don’t eat after 7PM if you suffer from insomnia. Eating stimulates the digestive system and can increase a person’s energy.
  • Exercise: Make sure to exercise in the early evening and not right before you go to bed.
  • Herbs: Drink chamomile tea, a natural relaxant.
  • Stress: Try yoga or meditation to try and relieve stress.
  • Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine
