Acupuncture and the Treatment of Headaches and Migraines
Many people suffer from migraines and headaches. What I tell patients is that if you get the occasional headache or migraine, taking an over the counter medication won’t be that bad but if they suffer from chronic migraines or headaches it is important to treat the “root” issue. First, going to a doctor and evaluating the cause of migraines or headaches is important since many serious health issues can present with migraines or headaches. Headaches can be categorized into tension, cluster and sinus headaches and treatment includes pain relievers.
In Chinese Medicine, diagnosis of a headache depends on the different patterns that are presented.
Dampness: These type of headaches feel “heavy”. People generally tend to experience these types of headaches in rain or humid weather.
Qi Stagnation: This type of headache can precede a woman’s menstruation. It can also come when someone is experiencing stress. This headache is often felt at the sides of the temple and behind the eyes.
Blood Deficiency: This type of headache can come after a woman ends her menstruation. It can also come after exercise or too much exertion.
Qi Deficiency: This type of headache one can wake up with. It comes towards the end of the day or upon exertion. Rest helps to alleviate this type of headache. These headaches can be found on the forehead and are dull in nature.
Liver Yang Rising: The types of headache can come before menstruation or when someone gets anxious or angry. Dizziness and nausea can occur with this type of headache. These headaches are experienced at the top of the headache, temples and behind the eyes.
Blood Stasis: These headaches are at a fixed location and are “stabbing” in nature. They can occur with the onset of menstruation or can also be seen in chronic headache sufferers. These types of headaches can also occur after head trauma.
